Family Run Business
Alton Garden Centre was founded in March 1971, Derek Bunker borrowed £1,000 from the bank and on a tiny area off the Arterial road just big enough for ten cars, he opened the doors to a lean-to greenhouse and Alton Garden Centre was born.
Fifty years on, we are still a family run business with Derek at the forefront, joined by his wife, three sons and a daughter, all of whom work in the business alongside another six members of the extended family. The Altons team has also grown considerably with over 90 full-time staff, some of whom have been with the business for over 30 years.
We stock a wide range of top-quality plants. We are so confident that our hardy plants are the best in Essex, that we give you a 2-year guarantee of satisfaction after purchase, provided they are given reasonable care and you have proof of purchase.
We believe in shop local, support local, so many of our plants are locally sourced and some are even grown on our on-site nursery. This also means that they are suitable for local growing conditions, meaning they’ll really thrive in your garden.
We have numerous experts in our store, who can help you with any questions you may have and offer you advice and support you need.

Over the last fifty two years, the garden centre has grown with the industry. Garden centres as we once knew them have changed dramatically and now offer more products than ever before.
The success of the business can be attributed to our dedicated staff and loyal customers, who have adapted to the changes in the industry. There are no professional buyers working in an office at Altons. Each department has its own manager working on the shop floor who is responsible for buying the stock and they are supported by a team of assistants that specialize in their category. We pride ourselves on our customer service and always strive to provide a professional and knowledgeable service to every customer.
Today, Altons stocks everything you need for your garden and conservatory, as well as a vast range of gifts and goods for all the rooms in your home.
The last year has been incredibly difficult for so many people, and we are grateful that we have been able to remain open during the majority of this period. Many of our customers have been shielding and unable to visit the store itself. Our staff have made it possible for many of them to be able to get hold of all the items that they need, through our online and telephone services, and even personally delivering items to customers, in order for them to continue to enjoy their garden.
